After a series of miraculous escapes, his luck finally deserted him; he found himself, with his mothers and brothers, in a cattle-truck bound for Treblinka. At last he was helpless, unable to protect his loved ones any further. They were herded into the gas chambers, while he was forced to pile still-warm corpses into the trenches.
