2 Bobbitt, Philip The Shield of Achilles: War, Peace and the Course of History
UK Allen Lane 2002 1st Hardcover Excellent Good 24 Cm
approx 1.5kg packed for post, 922 clean white well bound pp, minor wear to corners & leading edge of dj, This ambitious book sets out to reinterpret the history of the twentieth century as a long war in which conditions of outright military confrontation or of frantic "cold" competition lasted from the outbreak of the first world war until the collapseof the Soviet Union. He goes on to argue that this long experience of war has brought about a fundamental change in the constitutional basis of sates, and explores this idea through the notion of the "market state". By clarifying the relationship between constitutional settlements and military power, and by drawing on his firsthand experience in the heart of superpower planning, Bobbitt reveals a startling new way of understanding the past - and an awesome glimpse of the future. review >>> Breathtaking scope handled with confidence and clarity. Ambitious, erudite, persuasive. A tour de force historical narrative of state hegemonics. But with an agenda. and >>> That Bobbitt writes elegantly and synthesizes everything from poetry to policy to warfare to theory so beautifully makes the experience all the more rewarding and compelling.

4 Dowrick, Stephanie In the Company of Rilke: Why a 20th-Century Visionary Poet Speaks So Eloquently to 21st-Century Readers
Allen & Unwin 2006 Paperback Excellent None issued 23.5cm Inscription and Signature of Author
In the Company of Rilke is a rare book about a rare poet. Rainer Maria Rilke was a giant of twentieth-century writing who remains a visionary voice for our own time, captivating readers not only with his brilliance but also his fearlessness about the "deepest things." Speaking through his own contradictions and ambivalences, he gives readers a profound understanding of the complex beauty of human existence. review >>> I have not had much experience of poetry, but am finding Stephanie's commentary and elucidations have great clarity. I guess you would have to describe this book as deeply spiritual but you may be amazed at how much you appreciate and agree with.

10 John Stallworthy (ed) The Oxford Book of War Poetry
UK Oxford University Press 1984 Hardcover Excellent Very Good 22cm
There can be no area of human experience that has generated a wider range of powerful feelings than war. The 250 poems in John Stallworthy's classic and celebrated anthology span centuries of human experience of war, from David's Lament for Saul and Jonathan, and Homer's Iliad, to the finest poems of the First and Second World Wars, and beyond. Reflecting the feelings of poets as diverse as Byron, Hardy, Owen, Sassoon, and Heaney, they chart a great shift in human awareness--from man's early celebratory "war-songs" to the twentieth century's darker poetic responses to "man's inhumanity to man." ,,<< cooglebooks summary. 16 Murray, Nicholas The Red Sweet Wine of Youth: The Brave and Brief Lives of the War Poets
UK Little, Brown 2010 Hardcover Very Good Very Good/Good 24cm
750g, 343 crisp pp, 2 photo sections. The poetry that emerged from the trenches of WWI is a remarkable body of work, at once political manifesto and literary beacon for the twentieth century. In this passionate recreation of the lives of the greatest poets to come out of the conflict, Nicholas Murray brilliantly reveals the men themselves as well as the struggle of the artist to live fully and to bear witness in the annihilating squalor of battle. Bringing into sharp focus the human detail of each life, using journals, letters and literary archives, Murray brings to life the men's indissoluble comradeship, their complex sexual mores and their extraordinary courage. Poignant, vivid and unfailingly intelligent, Nicholas Murray's study offers new and finely tuned insight into the - often devastatingly brief - lives of a remarkable generation of men. reviewer says >>> - I found the entire volume incredibly informative. The book contains twelve poets in all - Julian Grenfell, Rupert Brooke, Charles Hamilton Sorley, Siegfried Sassoon, dear Wilfred Owen, Robert Graves, Isaac Rosenberg, Ivor Gurney, Edward Thomas, Edmund Blunden, David Jones and T.E. Hulme - such heroic men, and such a terrible loss. - The information throughout was set out marvellously, and I liked the way in which Murray had sorted the poets into distinct sections, based on influences or the whereabouts of the soldiers in the First World War, for example. about the author >> Nicholas Murray is the acclaimed biographer of Victorian poet and critic Matthew Arnold (Hodder), Andrew Marvell, Aldous Huxley and Kafka and, most recently, a book about Victorian travel, A Corkscrew is Most Useful.

17 Orr, James Poems on Various Subjects (with a Sketch of His life)
Belfast Wm. Mullan and Son 1935 Hardcover Very Good No Jacket 17cm
James Orr of Ballycarry "James Orr, the humble and gifted Ballycarry weaver, has long been classed with the Irish immortals." James Orr was born in 1770 at the little village of Ballycarry, between Larne and Carrickfergus, and in early life followed the trade of a journeyman weaver. He became well known in his own neighbourhood as "the Poet of Ballycarry." Orr believed in the cause which he advocated; his poetry was not mere verse-making, but the genuine outburst of his heart; and he soon became an affiliated member of the political union. In 1798 he took an active part in the battle of Antrim, and as a consequence was obliged to go into hiding. He appeared before the authorities and surrendered himself. He was sent to prison but in the end set free on condition of transporting himself to America, he did not remain many years; matters had rapidly improved at home, and he returned to his native village and his original loom. Green boards, spine sunned & spotty, 317 vg sewn-in pp Book appears to be the first of the 1935 re-issues, the titling is not gilt but simple black print.
