Malta Spitfire Pilot: A Personal Account of Ten Weeks of War, April-June 1942, Barnham, Denis
4 Barnham, Denis Malta Spitfire Pilot: A Personal Account of Ten Weeks of War, April-June 1942
UK Frontline Books 2011 Hardcover Excellent Excellent 22.5cm
202 crisp white pp with 2 photo sections, less than 500g for posting. This memoir was written by the author as he and his fellow pilots battled against terrible odds and under constant attack. His words reflect honestly the sheer terror of flying from Malta. Barnham, who arrived on Malta as an inexperienced pilot, but grew into a battle-hardened Spitfire ace over his gruelling two hundred operational hours between 13 April and 21 June 1942. Malta was of great strategic importance to the Allies, and was pivotal to their success in North Africa as it provided the perfect launching pad for aircraft to attack Axis supply ships in the Mediterranean. the island in turn suffered intensive bombing by the German and Italian air forces as a direct result.

6 Bishop, Patrick Bomber Boys
UK Harper Press 2007 Hardcover Good/Fair Good 24 Cm
ex- Edinburgh lib bk so usual stamps, lib plastic cover, also apparently Scotties aren't as careful as they should be as 2 photo pp loose----grrrr & low price! Details hereThis book is written about those who actually flew, the pilots, navigators, bomb aimers, rear gunners. Most of the recollections are take from their letters. This is because the Bomber Boys formed the front line of WWII. That meant the death rate was appalling. You cannot get away from the sense of loss - Patrick Bishop has done a brilliant job of bringing the Bomber Boys to life, and latterly showing how little their achievements and sacrifice have been officially recognised. 429pp, 800g to post.

7 Bowyer, Chaz Bristol F2B Fighter King of the Two Seaters
UK Ian Allan 1985 Hardcover Very Good Good 24 Cm
This book sourced from Cheshire library is Bowyer's study of this classic aircraft, the most successful British two-seater of the war, when flown like a fighter it was the equal of any single-seater - with the added benefit of a gun to protect the pilot's back. This aircraft came in operational use in 1917 to give the British pilots better opportunities to survive and overcome the battle tasks that were available. The plane was later widely distributed and completed tasks anywhere in the world by British forces and by other countries' air forces. 128pp, usual library indicators, plastic over dj, too far over the 500g so why not add a book or two to the satchel & use up that postage.

Target for Tonight: A Pilot's Memoirs of Flying Long-Range Reconnaissance and Pathfinder Missions in World War Two, Braithwaite, Sqd Ldr Denys
8 Braithwaite, Sqd Ldr Denys Target for Tonight: A Pilot's Memoirs of Flying Long-Range Reconnaissance and Pathfinder Missions in World War Two
UK Pen & Sword 2005 Hardcover Excellent Excellent 24 Cm
154 crisp pp, a whisker under 500g, photo sections. The author was born of a prosperous Yorkshire family and joined the Auxiliary Air Force on his eighteenth birthday in 1939. On the occasion of Chamberlain's speech to the British nation on September 3 the situation changed dramatically and from being a 'super weekend club', his squadron was assigned coastal patrol duties. In October he was posted to Peterborough to learn to fly with the regular RAF. There followed a period of convoy protection flying Blenheims and then flying with the meteorological flight based at Bircham Newington on the Norfolk coast. Here he flew a Gloster Gladiator with a flight that had the reputation of 'flying even when the birds wouldn't'. Now a Squadron Leader, Braithwaite became acquainted with the legendary de Havilland Mosquito and flew long-range weather reconnaissance flights (PAMPA) under the control of Coastal Command. Tropical illness cut short his career & he lived to write this marvellous book - review >> It reads like a good novel in the easy fashion it is written and is one of the finest books of this genre I've read so far. Thoroughly entertaining and packed with stories, some funny, some sad, some boys own adventure, the author writes in an understated manner that makes it a joy to read. > Book in giftable condition <

12 Chaz Bowyer, Armand Van Ishoven Halifax Wellington
UK Promotional Reprint Co. London 1994 Hardcover Very Good Very Good 30cm
Halifax and Wellington originally separate vols, 127pp re Halifax at War, >> This most versatile but much maligned aircraft played its part in a wide variety of roles and theatres of operations - from the flak-torn night skies over north-west Europe, to the swirling sands of the North African desert; from the bleak watery wastes of the North Atlantic, to top-secret 'cloak and dagger' operations. Former Halifax crewmen add their recollections to the visual history provided here by the impressive selection of contemporary photographs and profiles. This formula provides a fascinating insight into the life and times of a famous warplane, and of those who flew in Halifaxes.129 more on the Wellington at War. >>> The Vickers Wellington was RAF Bomber Command's leading twin engined medium bomber in its day, which was from the outbreak of war until 1943, and from then on the Wellington's specialised variants went on in service through the war period and beyond until the last one, a trainer, in 1953. It was remarkable for its geodetic structure - a feature of construction developed by Dr. Barnes Wallis, that made the airframe capable of sustaining enormous punishment, and yet survive the journey back to base. 1.4 kgs to post.

Australia Australian Military History Publications 2001 Card Cover Very Good None issued 21cm Inscription and Signature of Author
154 crisp pp with bw pics throughout. post less than 500g. Ron Cundy grew up dirt poor in the depression. He barely wore shoes to school but eventually did well enough thanks partly to his WWI veteran father and mother doing it tough to provide him with a decent education. He first worked for the New South Wales state government in public service but when war came, he was pretty keen to join up. His initial assessment, due to his not so good maths marks, was an "O" for observer, a rating he was pretty distressed with. However, a chance meeting with a colleague, now an RAAF clerk, fixed this with one stroke of a pen - the O became a P...read the book for the rest! review >>> This is a seriously good book, well written with lashings of flying, humour and insight.

The Source Book of the RAF, Delve, Ken
20 Delve, Ken The Source Book of the RAF
Shrewsbury Airlife England 1994 1st Hardcover Fine Very Good 30.5cm
308 crisply white pp, unclipped dj, no inscriptions, 1.5kg packed to post. "The Source Book of the RAF" provides access to material not usually seen in print and brings together, for the first time, a combination of historical facts and figures based upon primary sources. The book deals comprehensively with all abbreviations used in primary sources and gives an in-depth guide to the RAF Order of Battle. The structure of the RAF is examined closely detailing Groups, Squadrons, Wings and Flights. The aircraft employed throughout its history are fully recorded, as are aircraft markings and squadron codes. In addition a complete chronology of the Service is included. The Royal Air Force was created as an independent third service within the British military establishment on 1st April 1918. During the years of World War One the nature of air power as an element of the military art had been firmly established and many now believed that here was the ultimate war-winning weapon. Over the subsequent 75 years the RAF has endeavoured, often in the face of political constraint, to remain at the forefront of technological and tactical developments, and to fulfill its role in peace and war. The history of the Royal Air Force is, to a large extent, the history of air power as many nations have looked to the example set by the RAF. Massive factual resource in great "gift-worthy" shape.
