5 Addison, Paul Churchill on the home front 1900-1955
UK Jonathan Cape 1992 Hardcover Very Good Very Good 24cm
ex-InterClyde lib - those library users must be among the most careful in the world as the book's in great order. 493pp, several photo sections & just over a kilo for posting. A masterly chronicle of Churchill as a domestic figure rather than as the bulldog wartime leader, and one of the most subtle portraits of him as a politician. Addison (History/Univ. of Edinburgh, Scotland) revises the view of Churchill as uninterested and out of his depth in domestic affairs, painting instead a nuanced picture of a canny parliamentarian. Churchill changed parties twice but managed to accomplish the change, writes Addison, ""with exceptional dexterity,"" making it appear as if he were maintaining his principles while the parties changed theirs. Most impressively, Addison doesn't settle for easy classifications, admitting that ""Churchill...is a man of whom almost everything that can be said is true in part."" Innovative and thought-provoking. A tour de force. Well, what more can I say, sounds a great bio indeed.

Bombshell : the secret story of America's unknown atomic spy Conspiracy, Albright, Joseph & Kunstel, Marcia
6 Albright, Joseph & Kunstel, Marcia Bombshell : the secret story of America's unknown atomic spy Conspiracy
Times Books 1997 Hardcover Excellent Very Good 24.5cm
Ted Hall was a physics prodigy so gifted that he was asked to join the Manhattan Project when he was only eighteen years old. There, in wartime Los Alamos, working under Robert Oppenheimer and Bruno Rossi, Hall helped build the atomic bomb. But he also worked for others . . . Bombshell tracks Hall from his days as a brilliant schoolboy in New York City, when he came under the influence of his older brother's radical tracts, and on to Harvard, Los Alamos, and Chicago, where Hall continued to spy even after the war was over, passing more secrets while the Soviets were trying to build the Hydrogen bomb. For forty years only a few Russians knew what Ted Hall really did. Now Joseph Albright and Marcia Kunstel reveal the astonishing true story of the atomic spies who got away. Bombshellis history at its most explosive. review >>> It combines outstanding research and compelling narrative. 400pp, 900g for post.

10 Basham, AL The Wonder That Was India: A Survey of the History and Culture of the Indian Sub-Continent from the Coming of the Muslims
Fontana 1974 Papeback Very Good None issued 20cm
review - it thoroughly deserves its reputation as a classic, holding up well after 53 years. In my experience with histories of India, you generally have two extremes: Ones written by Indian authors that so aggressively seek to discount earlier volumes' Western slant it comes across as "one-upsmanship", and the volumes written by Western authors that seek to apologize for earlier transgressions. A.L. Basham achieves a happy medium. Some of his language can be excused as indicative of the time in which he wrote the book, 7 years after the Partition, but otherwise he does a great job of covering Indian history up to the High Middle Ages with thoroughness and equanimity. His writing is also very engaging. 572pp with 3 photo mid sections

11 Beales, Derek The Risorgimento and the Unification of Italy
Longman Group 1981 Paperback Good None issued 22cm
176 pp & less than 500g to post. Faults? the upper right corner has had a bit of mafiosa treatment & spine sunned, see photo. The Risorgimento and the Unification of Italy by Derek Beales introduces the reader to the relationship between the Italian national movement, achieved by the Risorgimento, and the Italian unification in 1860. Covering the literary, cultural, religious and political history of the period, Beales and Biagini show Italy struggled towards nation state status on all fronts. There are many new documents and all the most up to date research of the last 20 years has been incorporated. The long introduction and useful footnotes will be of assistance to those interested in Italian unification. For those interested in Italian or European history this is a succinct & wise work, both factual & opinionated & backed with a section of "documents" that make up half the book and are valuable referral points to Beales explanations. The coincident events, the colonial handshakes, the rise & fall of neighbouring empires as well as the "heroes" of unification are well illuminated.

12 Beckett, Ian FW The Roots of Counter-Insurgency
UK Blandford Press 1988 Hardcover Very Good Good 25 Cm
700g for post, 160 crisp pp. Looks at the history of modern guerrila warfare and examines the experience of British, French, German, Soviet, and American armies. All that is written about the activities of the partisan, the rebel, the guerrilla seems to emphasize the inhabitant over the invader. This imported collection of six essays from instructors in military science at Britain's Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst examines the other side, using for example literally hundreds of campaigns to show that basic lessons in putting down revolts by subject people must be learned over and over by governments and their military branches. Six countries' attempts at suppression are examined with academic acuity and thoroughness, but the examples dissected are best aimed at those with specialized knowledge. A scholarly treatment, but very accessible. review >>> This overview is extremely well done; a typical example of the generally excellent work of Professor Beckett.

One Christmas in Washington Churchill and Roosevelt Forge the Grand Alliance, Bercuson, David J. & Herwig, Holger H.
14 Bercuson, David J. & Herwig, Holger H. One Christmas in Washington Churchill and Roosevelt Forge the Grand Alliance
UK Phoenix 2006 Softcover Very Good None issued 21.5cm
320 crisp pp, photo section, less than 500g for posting. Light cover wear (embossed title colour worn) contents >> Fighting fascism is hard. Fighting it while arguing who's in charge of the struggle only makes things harder. Multinational military coalitions have been around since the time of the Peloponnesian War, Canadian military historians Bercuson and Herwig write. But WWII imposed requirements of a novel sort on the coalition that formed between Britain and the U.S.; both Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt knew that "Allied victory would demand that their two nations fight virtually as one," and that forging this unity both on the battlefield and in the production of war materiel was essential. Over a ten-day period around Christmas 1941, the two met in Washington to lay the foundations for what Churchill would dub "the grand alliance."
