3 Butler, Elizabeth Elizabeth Butler Battle Artist
UK Fisher Press 1993 Paperback Very Good/good None Issued 19.5cm
Both Elizabeth's parents were interested in art and at an early age she was encouraged to paint and draw. At first Elizabeth concentrated on painting portraits and landscapes but after visiting France, where she saw paintings inspired by the Franco-Prussian War, she began to paint military subjects. In 1874 submitted a painting entitled the Roll Call to the Royal Academy in London - it was so popular it was taken on tour. In later conflicts Britons sought more encouraging visions & her fame diminished. "I never painted for the glory of war, but to portray its pathos and heroism."- EB quote. 281pp, less than 500g for post. Fascinating autobiography for military, art, feminist interest. 10 Williams, Iain Cameron Underneath a Harlem Moon: The Harlem to Paris Years of Adelaide Hall
UK Continuum 2002 Hardcover Excellent Excellent 24 Cm
Williams takes the reader on a fascinating roller-coaster ride from Adelaide's birth in Brooklyn through her humble childhood in Harlem, from her triumphs on Broadway to the glamour of Paris's Moulin Rouge. Adelaide Hall is the missing link in Harlem's Renaissance, historically the richest period of American black culture. As its most important and influential female star, she dynamically pushed down the barriers that had previously prevented black entertainers from reaching mass recognition. Readers get a glimpse inside the most sophisticated and celebrated nightclubs in the world and follow Adelaide across two continents on a groundbreaking eighteen-month RKO tour. By the end of 1932, Adelaide had performed for millions and in the process had become one of America's wealthiest black women. Her exile to Paris in 1935 brought with it new challenges and rewards. By 1938, not content with being dubbed the Queen of Montmartre, she set her sights on conquering Britain. Underneath a Harlem Moon concludes with Adelaide's mysterious disappearance in November 1938, which has, until now, never been publicly explained. review>>>> Overall, a hugely enjoyable read made easy by Williams's approachable style of writing and keen interest towards the characters he portrays within the text. A must for all jazz and popular music buffs.
