7 Jeffrey, Betty White Coolies
Australia Angus & Robertson 1993 Paperback Excellent None issued 20cm
review > Many POWs kept diaries of their experiences and all of these are of unique historical value, but Betty Jeffrey's work sets itself a rung above most of the others because of its author's unique knack of expressing herself and her surroundings with pithy irony. You feel guilty for laughing with her at her sardonic descriptions of the terrible humiliations and mindless cruelties of the POW camps, and you weep for her when her energy and hope begins to fail along with her health, but she picks you up again with a wry laugh at her dreadful plight. A very worthy title to add to your library 204pp in great order & some bw photos.

10 Lawrence, Christopher Swing Symphony: Another Midlife Adventure in the South of France
Australia Knopf 2004 First Edition Hard Cover Excellent Excellent 19cm
Lawrence owns up in the subtitle to writing "another midlife adventure in the south of France", his book is far more idiosyncratic and disciplined than any of the other books of that wine-and-food-soaked genre. Lawrence's writing is witty, erudite, engaging and lively - not so different from his radio voice. One of the many eccentrics who lived in his French village is an artist who moonlights as Zorro. When introducing this character, Lawrence describes him as leaping off a wall with "Fairbanksian panache". Another character in this book is Booker, an Australian friend and broadcaster, who now lives in France. Booker is a collector of shellac 78 records from the Swing era and whenever an opportunity arises, Lawrence gives us a bit more of that thing. Lawrence's quest is to see if he can learn to relax and do what his musical heroes did - swing. -- Reviewer, Dianne Dempsey 224pp in great order

12 Neighbour, Sally The Mother of Mohammed
Australia Melbourne University Press 2009 Soft Cover Very Good None issued 24 Cm
A whisker under 500g to post, 358pp In The Mother of Mohammed, Four Corners journalist Sally Neighbour tells the extraordinary story of how a dope-smoking beach bunny from Mudgee, Robyn Hutchinson, became Rabiah-a member of the jihadist elite. Known among her peers as 'the mother of Mohammed', and as 'the Elizabeth Taylor of the jihad' in CIA circles, Rabiah lived for twenty years on the frontlines of the global holy war. With a reputation for tough investigative journalism, Sally Neighbour persuaded Rabiah to tell her story. She investigates how Rabiah became a trusted insider to the Jemaah Islamiyah, Taliban and al Qaeda leaderships, and married a leading figure in Osama bin Laden's inner sanctum. In The Mother of Mohammed Sally Neighbour discovers a world of converts and true believers. This unique and confronting account from inside the jihad helps us to understand the magnetism of the Islamist cause.
