11 Acton, Harold The Last Medici
London Macmillan 1980 Hardcover Excellent Excellent 24.5cm
Acton seems to have rowed in the same team as Norman Douglas, possibly a book about him will be just as readable as this insight into the Medici clan, originally a 1932 issue. Among his contemporaries at Eton were Eric Blair (the writer George Orwell), Cyril Connolly, Robert Byron, Alec Douglas-Home, Ian Fleming, Brian Howard, Oliver Messel, Anthony Powell, Henry Yorke (the novelist Henry Green). Acton's non- historical works include four volumes of poetry, three novels, two novellas, two volumes of short stories, two volumes of autobiography and a memoir of his friend Nancy Mitford, who was his exact contemporary. His historical works include The Last Medici, a study of the later Medici Grand Dukes, and two large volumes on the House of Bourbon, rulers of the Kingdom of Naples in the 18th and earlier 19th century, which together may be said to constitute his magnum opus. 322pp with several illustrated sections, just past the kilo packed to post.

15 Adams, Douglas The Salmon of Doubt Hitchhiking the Galaxy One Last Time
UK Macmillan 2002 Hardcover Excellent Excellent 24.5cm
The Salmon of Doubt: Hitchhiking the Galaxy One Last Time is a posthumous collection of previously published and unpublished material by Douglas Adams. It consists largely of essays about technology and life experiences, but its major selling point is the inclusion of the incomplete novel on which Adams was working at the time of his death, The Salmon of Doubt (from which the collection gets its title, a reference to the Celtic myth of the Salmon of Wisdom). 299pp

16 Addison, Paul Churchill on the home front 1900-1955
UK Jonathan Cape 1992 Hardcover Very Good Very Good 24cm
ex-InterClyde lib - those library users must be among the most careful in the world as the book's in great order. 493pp, several photo sections & just over a kilo for posting. A masterly chronicle of Churchill as a domestic figure rather than as the bulldog wartime leader, and one of the most subtle portraits of him as a politician. Addison (History/Univ. of Edinburgh, Scotland) revises the view of Churchill as uninterested and out of his depth in domestic affairs, painting instead a nuanced picture of a canny parliamentarian. Churchill changed parties twice but managed to accomplish the change, writes Addison, ""with exceptional dexterity,"" making it appear as if he were maintaining his principles while the parties changed theirs. Most impressively, Addison doesn't settle for easy classifications, admitting that ""Churchill...is a man of whom almost everything that can be said is true in part."" Innovative and thought-provoking. A tour de force. Well, what more can I say, sounds a great bio indeed.

Bombshell : the secret story of America's unknown atomic spy Conspiracy, Albright, Joseph & Kunstel, Marcia
18 Albright, Joseph & Kunstel, Marcia Bombshell : the secret story of America's unknown atomic spy Conspiracy
Times Books 1997 Hardcover Excellent Very Good 24.5cm
Ted Hall was a physics prodigy so gifted that he was asked to join the Manhattan Project when he was only eighteen years old. There, in wartime Los Alamos, working under Robert Oppenheimer and Bruno Rossi, Hall helped build the atomic bomb. But he also worked for others . . . Bombshell tracks Hall from his days as a brilliant schoolboy in New York City, when he came under the influence of his older brother's radical tracts, and on to Harvard, Los Alamos, and Chicago, where Hall continued to spy even after the war was over, passing more secrets while the Soviets were trying to build the Hydrogen bomb. For forty years only a few Russians knew what Ted Hall really did. Now Joseph Albright and Marcia Kunstel reveal the astonishing true story of the atomic spies who got away. Bombshellis history at its most explosive. review >>> It combines outstanding research and compelling narrative. 400pp, 900g for post.

20 Alder, Garry Beyond Bokhara, The Life of William Moorcroft, Asian Explorer and Pioneer Veterinary Surgeon 1767-1825
UK Century 1985 Hardcover Very Good-good Very Good/Good 23.5cm
417pp, a kilo to post. ex-Wilmslow lib (Cheshire), usual indicators/tickets. In the India office library there is a letter addressed to w. moorcroft edq., samarkand or elsewhere'. It is a tribute to this astonishing man that letter reached him, 1,000 miles away across the mountains and deserts of central asia. Yet today few people have heard of him or of his pioneering achievements as a surgeon and explorer. this long overdue and fascinating biography at last gives moorcroft the recognition he deserves. According to Bill Buxton > "This is the only biography of William Moorcroft, one of the great early explorers of the region north west of India. He was a veterinarian who came to India in 1808 as Superintendent of East India Company's horses. He traveled widely, ostensibly in search of breeding stock, but this was clearly more of a pretext than fact. He undertook a journey into western Tibet in 1812, across the Garhwal Himalaya to Lake Manasarowar, Mount Kailas region, the Rakas Tal, and Gartok. Moorcroft and Hearsey were the first Englishmen in the area. "His next major trip was to Bokhara. He left British territory in 1820, for a trip that would last until 1825. Due to civil unrest in Afghanistan, he decided to go via Ladakh and Chinese Turkistan. He waited in Leh for permission from Kashgar, during which time he traveled and explored the greater part of Ladakh, the Karakoram Pass, the head-waters of the Yarkand River, the Western Himalaya, the Karakoram and the NW Frontier. In 1824, after deciding that permission would never come , he decided to go via Afghanistan, regardless of the civil conflict there. Traveled through Kashmir and Punjab, over the Khyber Pass, across the Oxus, and got to Bokhara. He died during the return trip."
