Barbara Groseclose examines British public statuary and church monuments in India.Beginning with a brief history of the East India Company, the first chapter describes the physical settings for which the sculptures were intended and gives a short but colourful account of British life and death in India during the eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century. Subsequent chapters concentrate on the manner in which sculptural imagery rewarded financial and military success, established the notion of service as a benefit to Indians or encouraged the study of Indian languages and literatures. Illustrated with photographs of every work treated in the text, the majority of which have never been reproduced. Includes bibiliography and extensive index as well as notes.
