Bombshell : the secret story of America's unknown atomic spy Conspiracy, Albright, Joseph & Kunstel, Marcia
4 Albright, Joseph & Kunstel, Marcia Bombshell : the secret story of America's unknown atomic spy Conspiracy
Times Books 1997 Hardcover Excellent Very Good 24.5cm
Ted Hall was a physics prodigy so gifted that he was asked to join the Manhattan Project when he was only eighteen years old. There, in wartime Los Alamos, working under Robert Oppenheimer and Bruno Rossi, Hall helped build the atomic bomb. But he also worked for others . . . Bombshell tracks Hall from his days as a brilliant schoolboy in New York City, when he came under the influence of his older brother's radical tracts, and on to Harvard, Los Alamos, and Chicago, where Hall continued to spy even after the war was over, passing more secrets while the Soviets were trying to build the Hydrogen bomb. For forty years only a few Russians knew what Ted Hall really did. Now Joseph Albright and Marcia Kunstel reveal the astonishing true story of the atomic spies who got away. Bombshellis history at its most explosive. review >>> It combines outstanding research and compelling narrative. 400pp, 900g for post.

8 Asher, Michael Get Rommel The Secret British Mission to Kill Hitler's Greatest General
UK Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2004 Hardcover Very Good Very Good 23.5cm
ex-Swindon lib, usual stamps etc. In summer 1941 Erwin Rommel was Hitler's favourite general: he had driven the British out of Libya and stood poised to invade Egypt. He seemed unbeatable. So the British decided to have him killed. The British opened their counter-attack with a series of special forces raids, the first ever operation by the newly formed SAS. Rommel was one of the targets. Michael Asher reveals how poor planning and incompetence in high places led to disaster in the desert-- and how fantastic bravery and brilliant improvisation enabled a handful of men to escape. Classic real life adventure, written by best-selling desert expert and novelist Michael Asher. 303pp & just under 500g for post.

9 Bader, Douglas Fight for the Sky The Story of the Spitfire and the Hurricane
UK Sidgwick & Jackson 1973 Softcover Good None issued 24 Cm
Bader tells the inspiring story of the Battle of Britain from the viewpoint of 'The Few'. Using superb illustrations he traces the development of the Spitfire and Hurricane and describes the nail-biting actions of those who flew them against far superior numbers of enemy aircraft. As an added bonus, other well-known fighter aces including Johnnie Johnson, 'Laddie' Lucas and Max Aikten contribute to Douglas's book, no doubt out of affection and respect. This is a really important contribution to RAF history by one of the greatest -and certainly the most famous - pilot of the Second World War. 190pp, just too far over the 500g re post so why not get another book & use up that postage. Rear cover & last 3 pp have a stain (my guess is a spilt cup of tea), corners thumbed. Despite its faults it's a classic addition to any military shelf.

Young Adolph, Bainbridge, Beryl
10 Bainbridge, Beryl Young Adolph
London Duckworth 2000 Hardcover Fine Fine 20.5cm
Book pristine, less than 500g for post. The Hitler in this book is a lazy, easily irritated, self-centered dreamer with a fondness for sleeping and plagued by delusions of bearded men chasing him. His paranoia is a motivating factor in everything he does here. We see through Hitlerís eyes a number of items that would later be associated with Hitler - for tattooing numbers on people in a hostel to identify them to how easy it is for one civil servant to boss around a lot of people provided he has the authority to growing a moustache, itís all here.Hitler is already an anti-semite and a racist before the start of this story and one can assume the rest f the blanks in Hitlerís character will be filled in with his experiences in World War I.

11 Ball, Simon The Bitter Sea: The Struggle for Mastery in the Mediterranean 1935-1949
Harper Press 2009 Paperback Very Good - Good None issued 23.5cm
A lucid and masterly biography of the Mediterranean during a time of war, from Mussoliniís audacious bid for conquest to the creation of Israel and the start of the Cold War. The Bitter Sea is a fascinating interpretation of world affairs and a significant contribution to twentieth century history. With incisive strategic and political analysis, Simon Ball demonstrates in this dramatic narrative how the Mediterranean Sea lay at the heart of recent world history. 380pp, 2 photo sections, 750g packed for post. review >>>> An excellent history of the Mediterranean naval war which restores balance by giving appropriate weight to the courage and effectiveness of Italian naval forces. The political back biting and manipulation amongst the higher levels of the British naval forces was new to me and fascinating as was the extent of strong Nazi sympathy amongst the French naval establishment.

12 Bartlett, Norman Island Victory
Australia Angus & Robertson 1955 1st Hardcover Good Fair 20.5cm
166pp & less than 500g to post. Name removed top right corner 1st p. Bartlett was somewhat snobbish about authors who wrote luridly illustrated paperbacks, a case of judging a book by its cover. Anyway here is his novelisation of war in the Pacific, Island Victory > "The events in this book all happened. It is only fiction in so far as events have been rearranged into a coherent pattern." The action is set in 1944 in New Guinea and on Kamiri island - a Dutch possession to the north. An Australian Kittyhawk squadron recaptures Kamiri with US support. The action is mostly in the personalities and thoughts of the characters. There's some interesting absence of regard for the indigenous peoples swept up into this conflict.

D-Day The Battle for Normandy, Beevor, Antony
15 Beevor, Antony D-Day The Battle for Normandy
UK Viking 2009 Hardcover Very Good Very Good 24 Cm
The Normandy Landings that took place on D-Day involved by far the largest invasion fleet ever known. The scale of the undertaking was simply awesome. What followed them was some of the most cunning and ferocious fighting of the war, at times as savage as anything seen on the Eastern Front. As casualties mounted, so too did the tensions between the principal commanders on both sides. The war in northern France marked not just a generation but the whole of the post-war world, profoundly influencing relations between America and Europe. Making use of overlooked and new material from over thirty archives in half a dozen countries, D-Day is the most vivid and well-researched account yet of the battle of Normandy. As with Stalingrad and Berlin, Antony Beevor's gripping narrative conveys the true experience of war. review >>>Beevor, our premier recorder of the history of war, achieves an equivalent success to his earlier accounts of the battles for Stalingrad and Berlin in this epic account of the fight for France. Book in great order, 592pp, 3 photo sections, just under a kilo packed/carded for post to you.

One Christmas in Washington Churchill and Roosevelt Forge the Grand Alliance, Bercuson, David J. & Herwig, Holger H.
16 Bercuson, David J. & Herwig, Holger H. One Christmas in Washington Churchill and Roosevelt Forge the Grand Alliance
UK Phoenix 2006 Softcover Very Good None issued 21.5cm
320 crisp pp, photo section, less than 500g for posting. Light cover wear (embossed title colour worn) contents >> Fighting fascism is hard. Fighting it while arguing who's in charge of the struggle only makes things harder. Multinational military coalitions have been around since the time of the Peloponnesian War, Canadian military historians Bercuson and Herwig write. But WWII imposed requirements of a novel sort on the coalition that formed between Britain and the U.S.; both Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt knew that "Allied victory would demand that their two nations fight virtually as one," and that forging this unity both on the battlefield and in the production of war materiel was essential. Over a ten-day period around Christmas 1941, the two met in Washington to lay the foundations for what Churchill would dub "the grand alliance."
