3 Armitage, Ethel A Country Garden
London Country Life 1936 Hardcover Excellent-very Good Very Good 22.5cm John Farleigh
I have seen copies in excess of two hundred pounds so this is a great buy, intact dj with just a few nicks to bottom. Book has a collection of charming lineart by John Farleigh (24 in all incl violets, magnolias, cabbages & roses) The contents represent a beautiful journal of a year in a gardener's life in pre-war Britain. Armitage is also the author of "Garden & hedgerow" "Flower and Leaf" . Armitage must have been a force to be reckoned with - this extract focuses on the German's ideals of planting under the Nazis - quote - Ethel Armitage, in her book A County Garden, published just before World War Two, wrote of ground elder as 'a veritable Hun, overrun-ning any place it can get near ... [it] is no true Briton at all, having begun its career here as an undesirable alien'." The plant in the garden, the ground elder, is a microcosm of the threat of invasion by Nazi Germany, so that Armitage's garden is a metonym for Britain itself. . . . well indeed much of Britain's landscape & garden history is amazing so good for her to adopt the Churchillian stance. A really great floraholic's addition for their library.

1.4 kgs of gardenesque illustration & information, 272 pp, Faults? dj ruffled at top edge, 2cm closed tear at spine top on dj. Jane Brown's The English Garden in Our Time was originally published in 1966. It was the first book to attempt to describe the influences upon gardens and their design from the heyday of Gertrude Jekyll, one hundred years ago, to the innovative ideas of Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe. This new edition, re-titled The English Garden Through the Twentieth Century, has been revised to bring the story up to date, and add many new colour pictures. There is a detailed description of Gertrude Jekyll's life at Munstead Wood, followed by the story of the garden world she masterminded. These include arts and crafts gardens, and her work with Edwin Lutyens and other famous architects. Chapter three is devoted to the arts and crafts set piece, Rodmarton Manor. Jane Brown explores the lavish influences upon gardens during the thirties, and after the Second World war - the influences of the Italian style, the Modern Movement, of the making of Sissinghurst Castle's garden, and of Hidcote Manor and the 'new Georgia

16 Brown, Jane Vita's other world: a gardening biography of V. Sackville-West
UK Viking 1986 Hardcover Very Good Very Good 25.5cm
240 crisp pp & almost a kilo to post. Masses of bw & col pix throughout. In making Sissinghurst, Vita Sackville-West created one of the finest and most famous gardens in England and placed herself among the great gardeners of this century. This book traces Vita's development as a gardener, leading the reader through the past of her beloved Knole, her marriage, travels to Constantinople and Persia, her first garden at Long Barn and finally to Sissinghurst Castle where, with her husband Harold Nicolson, she designed and made a garden of outstanding beauty. reviewer says >>> This is an interesting portrait of Vita as gardener (I highly reccommend her gardening writing). I feel like so many biographers of Vita allow her bisexuality and, most particularly, her relationship with Virginia Woolf, to eclipse all her other accomplishments. This biography is a welcome change from all that-- not to mention the fact that there are so few biographies of gardeners in general. I feel like I learned a lot about Vita, about her garden at Sissinghurst, and about gardening in general from this book.
