1 Asher, Michael Get Rommel The Secret British Mission to Kill Hitler's Greatest General
UK Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2004 Hardcover Very Good Very Good 23.5cm
ex-Swindon lib, usual stamps etc. In summer 1941 Erwin Rommel was Hitler's favourite general: he had driven the British out of Libya and stood poised to invade Egypt. He seemed unbeatable. So the British decided to have him killed. The British opened their counter-attack with a series of special forces raids, the first ever operation by the newly formed SAS. Rommel was one of the targets. Michael Asher reveals how poor planning and incompetence in high places led to disaster in the desert-- and how fantastic bravery and brilliant improvisation enabled a handful of men to escape. Classic real life adventure, written by best-selling desert expert and novelist Michael Asher. 303pp & just under 500g for post.

2 Ball, Simon The Bitter Sea: The Struggle for Mastery in the Mediterranean 1935-1949
Harper Press 2009 Paperback Very Good - Good None issued 23.5cm
A lucid and masterly biography of the Mediterranean during a time of war, from Mussolini’s audacious bid for conquest to the creation of Israel and the start of the Cold War. The Bitter Sea is a fascinating interpretation of world affairs and a significant contribution to twentieth century history. With incisive strategic and political analysis, Simon Ball demonstrates in this dramatic narrative how the Mediterranean Sea lay at the heart of recent world history. 380pp, 2 photo sections, 750g packed for post. review >>>> An excellent history of the Mediterranean naval war which restores balance by giving appropriate weight to the courage and effectiveness of Italian naval forces. The political back biting and manipulation amongst the higher levels of the British naval forces was new to me and fascinating as was the extent of strong Nazi sympathy amongst the French naval establishment.

10 Macy, Ed Apache The Man, the MacHine, the Mission
Harper Press 2008 Hard Cover Excellent Excellent 24.5cm
What's it about? In 2007, Ed Macy's Apache squadron was dispatched to Afghanistan's notorious Helmand Province, with the mission to fight alongside and protect the men on the ground by any means necessary. When a marine goes missing in action, Macy and his team are the Army's only hope of bringing him back alive. With a soldier strapped to each side of two gunships, they must land in the heart of Jugroom Fort, a Taliban stronghold, and come face-to-face with hordes of their unrelenting enemy. What follows is a breathtaking rescue, unlike any the world has ever seen. -.-.-.-.-. reviews - This book is a personal account of the author's experiences as an AH-64 Apache helicopter gunship pilot during combat operations in Afghanistan. Very compelling, exciting, honest, and full of, as one might expect from a decorated combat veteran, humour. Does a good job of explaining that even with lots of technology, combat is still very personal, often complicated, and dangerous. 374pp bw photos. After a "brief" read I totally concur with +++ review, it's a book you'll flick open & two hours later you're still in there, it's Generation Kill but with a purpose.

Ploughing Sand: British Rule in Palestine, 1917-1948, Shephard, Naomi
12 Shephard, Naomi Ploughing Sand: British Rule in Palestine, 1917-1948
UK John Murray 1999 Hardcover Fine Excellent 23.5cm
This book recreates British rule in Palestine from the winter of 1917-when battle scared troops in flimsy desert gear clambered through mountain chill and mists to Jerusalem-to the spring of 1948 and the last High Commissioner's apologetic departure. Between these dates, the Jewish minority turned political weakness into strength, and the Palestine Arabs headed for disaster. How this happened under British administration is the subject of this richly documented account, based on public and private papers, memoirs, and interviews-many never previously published. This study is the first to reconstruct in detail the workings of the troubled Mandate administration, and the influence of its chief personalities. At the end, with the last laws passed against gambling, the land records preserved, and military equipment consigned to the sea, a leading official complained bitterly that all constructive efforts in Palestine had been like "ploughing sand". review >>> It is packed with many interesting and important details that make the book emminently readable and lay bare the roots of the enduring Arab-Israeli confrontation. 750g packed for post, 290 crisp pp, photo section amidships.
