5 Duncan, Roger F Dorothy Elizabeth : Building a Traditional Wooden Schooner
NY W. W. Norton & Company 200 Hardcover Excellent Good 22cm
From the dust jacket: "This is the story of Dorothy Elizabeth, a 28-foot schooner. Particularly, it is the story of why to build a traditional wooden sailing vessel that relies on age-old methods and materials, yet also embraces newfangled technologies. But mostly it is the story of the people--the score of craftsmen and craftswomen, friends, and family--who give their skill, advice, support, and time to turn Dorothy Elizabeth from an idea into a graceful, seaworthy reality. You will meet Ralph Stanley of Southwest Harbor, Maine, one of the world's great designers and builders of traditional wooden boats, and a disarmingly plainspoken master craftsmen in the maritime Maine tradition. You will meet Mary Chandler Duncan, a poet and the author's wife, soul mate, and first mate. You will meet Nat Wilson, sail maker, who took time out from building topsails for the USS Constitution to build sails for Dorothy Elizabeth. You will meet Frank Luke, neighbor, boatyard owner, all-around helper, and the man who launched Dorothy Elizabeth. And you will meet many other singular people up and down the coast from Portland, Maine, to Lunnenberg, Nova Scotia and beyond, drawn together by the building of a boat. 240 pages, slight mark on dj

6 Ferencsik, Robert, Will Neptune The Fundamentals of Fine Woodworking
Sterling Publishing Co Inc 1996 Softcover Very Good - Good None issued 25 Cm
Sterling Publishing Company, 1996 - 192 pages It takes more than power tools to make a fine woodworker. To become a competent woodworker, you must first understand the material -- its strengths, weaknesses, and general characteristics. Second, become aware of what you need to manipulate the wood -- how hard it is to cut and how sharp your tools have to be. And finally, formulate a cohesive plan before you begin your project. Basic lessons and exercises will teach you appreciation of your tools, what their capabilities are, what you need to do to prepare them, and how it feels to use them to their full potential. In this way, you'll begin to value the tremendous interplay between mind and body that makes the shapes appear. Once you see what you're capable of achieving manually, you will be able to set standards for power tool performance. This guidebook, laid out in a clear, sequential manner, is an essential reference for all woodworkers. Faults? small repaired tear at foot of cover

15 Lawrence, Christopher Swing Symphony: Another Midlife Adventure in the South of France
Australia Knopf 2004 First Edition Hard Cover Excellent Excellent 19cm
Lawrence owns up in the subtitle to writing "another midlife adventure in the south of France", his book is far more idiosyncratic and disciplined than any of the other books of that wine-and-food-soaked genre. Lawrence's writing is witty, erudite, engaging and lively - not so different from his radio voice. One of the many eccentrics who lived in his French village is an artist who moonlights as Zorro. When introducing this character, Lawrence describes him as leaping off a wall with "Fairbanksian panache". Another character in this book is Booker, an Australian friend and broadcaster, who now lives in France. Booker is a collector of shellac 78 records from the Swing era and whenever an opportunity arises, Lawrence gives us a bit more of that thing. Lawrence's quest is to see if he can learn to relax and do what his musical heroes did - swing. -- Reviewer, Dianne Dempsey 224pp in great order
