3 Campbell, Christy Mini: An Intimate Biography
UK Virgin Books 2009 Hardcover Excellent Excellent 19.5cm
From its birth in 1959, the Mini grew to become a national treasure and huge success: Princess Margaret owned one, as did Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, the Beatles, Peter Sellers and Marianne Faithfull. Its popularity with women in particular marked it out from the crowd, and sales soared as the car was taken up by the new urban elite and took a starring role in The Italian Job. But there was trouble - the basic Mini sold for less than it cost to produce, and by the early eighties the miracle machine had become a symbol of manufacturing incompetence. The end came in 2000, but a new generation of Mini was just around the corner, and today this motoring pin-up is as iconic as ever. Mini features contributions from those who have known and loved this troubled star, as well as its scornful critics. Full of fascinating facts and vivid stories, this is a fabulous celebration of a living national treasure that reads more like the life story of a wayward royal than a machine. 296pp, bw photos interspersed as well as a photo section amidships. 450g to post

6 Garfield, Simon Mini: The True and Secret History of the Making of a Motor Car
UK Faber & Faber, London 2010 Softcover Good None issued 19.5cm
By meeting the people behind the MINI, Simon Garfield uncovers a fascinating story of British endeavour, ingenuity and masterful marketing. The modern MINI has come a long way from the leaky floor and sliding windows. Here's the blurb - In May 1959, the first Mini was produced on an assembly line at Cowley, near Oxford. It would take a team of supremely talented designers, draftsmen, engineers and production-line workers to build a car that was unique in appearance and construction. They would clash frequently over an uncomfortable and unsafe prototype, and the public had to be convinced to buy a car that let in two inches of water when it rained. But somehow the Mini became an icon. Throughout its history, the people behind it have always known that they have been making something rare; a car with soul. The book is in great shape inside, the cover has a crease (probably caused by a VW owner) - inside lots of colour & bw pics. 285pp & less than 500g to post to you. DON'T lend it!

7 Glancey, Jonathan The Car A History of the Automobile
UK Carlton Books 2006 Hardcover Good Good 29cm
ex-lib copy, 256pp & heading for 2 kilos. A picture's worth a thousand words so check the pics. The Norman Wisdom shot is a classic as is the interesting text re these toy cars. The Car takes us on a tour of the many roles that the automobile has played in its lifetime, and the many guise and different models in which it has appeared. Not just a book of glossy advertising shots, The Car is a social history of the impact that cars and driving have had on the world. Book generally good order apart from the first few pp which have been "distressed" by a cranky librarian removing the pocket, tags. In a bafflement of maths the book looks oblong but measures square.

14 Wilson, Paul Chrome Dreams Automobile Styling Since 1893
USA Chilton Book Company 1976 Hard Boards Very Good/Good No Jacket 24 Cm
800g paked to post, 310pp with most pp featuring lineart of the cars referred to. Chrome dreams: automobile styling since 1893 A study--serious but not stuffy--of the "form of the automobile as cultural expression"; and, linked, a display of every significant model from the 1893 Duryea (part buggy, part bicycle) to the 1975 Chevrolet Monte Carlo (all show). The years 1897-1900 saw the emergence of the fight runabout, unsatisfactory because it "looked as it if were propelled by magic"; from Europe came the low-slung front-engine car, "a carriage no longer, but a machine"; and there were such conservative entries as the Packard: "By lagging slightly behind the latest developments, Packard offered the perfect balance of good taste and aristocratic disregard for mere novelty." Excessive as this fender-by-fender analysis sometimes seems, it is illuminating; and Wilson never loses sight of the underlying course of development.
