5 Acton, Harold The Last Medici
London Macmillan 1980 Hardcover Excellent Excellent 24.5cm
Acton seems to have rowed in the same team as Norman Douglas, possibly a book about him will be just as readable as this insight into the Medici clan, originally a 1932 issue. Among his contemporaries at Eton were Eric Blair (the writer George Orwell), Cyril Connolly, Robert Byron, Alec Douglas-Home, Ian Fleming, Brian Howard, Oliver Messel, Anthony Powell, Henry Yorke (the novelist Henry Green). Acton's non- historical works include four volumes of poetry, three novels, two novellas, two volumes of short stories, two volumes of autobiography and a memoir of his friend Nancy Mitford, who was his exact contemporary. His historical works include The Last Medici, a study of the later Medici Grand Dukes, and two large volumes on the House of Bourbon, rulers of the Kingdom of Naples in the 18th and earlier 19th century, which together may be said to constitute his magnum opus. 322pp with several illustrated sections, just past the kilo packed to post.

13 Anna Russell I'm not making this up, you Know the autobiography of the queen of musical Parody
NT Continuum 1985 Hardcover Excellent Excellent 23cm
The author describes her unhappy childhood, boarding school education, and career in musical comedy 246 clean well bound pp ed review > With the irrepressible zaniness that has delighted her fans for over 40 years, Russell (dubbed ""the world's funniest woman"" by the London Times) here births an autobiography with as much cheek as her tongue can muster. This ""Queen of Musical Parody"" clearly relishes tracing her eccentric, sometimes aristocratic, occasionally ""batty"" British, Canadian and Australian family, her austere English childhood, as well as her unique career as one of the world's few operatic comediennes. Russell discovered early on that performing made her feel alive and accepted. Despite numerous doubters, she managed to parlay her unsuccessful classical training at London's Royal College of Music (they thought her musically hopeless), her quasi-operatic voice (to her instructors' horror, her true ambition was grand opera), her outrageous sense of humor, and talent for writing and performing saucy parody, into a successful career. In radio, TV, film and stage appearances.
